Healing Trauma, Reclaiming Strength, Embracing Life.
Are you feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected from the world around you? Do past experiences continue to impact your daily life, relationships, or sense of self-worth? You’re not alone, and healing is possible. Trauma doesn’t have to define your story.
Trauma can come from exposure to any event - or an accumulation of events - that causes intense distress, fear, and a sense of powerlessness or helplessness. It can leave a lasting impact on your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Events that cause a trauma are often categorized into either “Little t” or “Big T” Traumas.
“Little t” traumas are generally events that don’t usually involve violence or risk of death but are very difficult nonetheless. Examples of such events can include but are not limited to the experience of being bullied, being rejected, losing a job, a break up with a partner, death of a pet or loved one, or anything that induces an intense feeling of loss and powerlessness.
“Big T” traumas are usually related to exposure to a life threatening event such as a natural disaster, war, violent crime, or an accident. Intense psychological traumas such as verbal, physical, and sexual abuse as well as death of a parent can also be classified as “Big t” traumas.
Although “Little t” traumas may not threaten one’s personal safety, the responses to chronic repeated “Little t” traumas can warrant a higher amount of emotional and psychological harm than exposure to one isolated “Big T” trauma. Exposure to trauma can impact one’s mental, physical, and emotional health and can manifest as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, disordered eating, unstable relationships, and increased risk for suicide.
